Standards, methods and tools
Which product, standard or applicator does a project need? Each answer names the product class and reads it against one standard edition, such as EN 1504-3:2005.
Construction chemicals are formulated specialty products, applied on site or in precast plants, that waterproof, repair, protect, join, bed, level, finish, cure, release or fire-protect concrete, masonry and structural steel. They are product classes, not single substances; UK readers know two as tanking (below-ground waterproofing) and render (US stucco). The full list of construction chemicals starts with the 15 families below.
Standards, codes and regulations are checked against their issuing bodies, product values against the named data sheet and prices against the dated source named in the sentence; see our methodology and fact-checking.
What Does ConstructionChemicals.net Cover?#
ConstructionChemicals.net covers the specialty chemical products that a specifier, contractor or applicator selects and applies to protect, repair, join, bed, level, finish or fire-protect concrete, masonry and structural steel. The reference runs to 240 pages plus news on two axes: 15 families with 110 product classes, and 8 structures and problems, such as basements and cracked concrete. Standards, methods, comparisons and materials, such as epoxy resins and silanes, sit around both axes.
The readers are specifiers, contractors, applicators, distributors and procurement teams who compare a data sheet with a requirement, so every standard appears with its edition (ASTM C881/C881M-20a, not "ASTM C881") and every rule with its date. How does the product axis divide the field?
15 Construction Chemical Product Families and Their Standards#
The 15 product families of construction chemicals, in the order this reference uses everywhere, run from waterproofing, repair, injection, grouts and anchoring to sealants, tile, flooring, sealers, curing, release, bonding, mortars, coatings and fireproofing. Together they hold 110 product classes, from 16 in flooring to 3 in form release. Where a CEN standard exists in two editions, the table gives the edition cited for CE marking, because a declaration of performance is issued against it. The table below compares each family's function, class count and one European and one US document.

CE basis: the edition cited for CE marking; CEN may list a newer edition that is not harmonised. Families with a star are core reference pages.
8 Application Hubs: Construction Chemicals by Structure and Problem#
The 8 application hubs start from the structure or the problem (basements, roofs, parking structures, bridges and tunnels, water-retaining structures, cracks, spalling and masonry) and lead to the product classes that solve it. One problem crosses up to three families, as a parking deck draws on waterproofing, repair and coatings. The hubs hold 21 topic pages, and every structure and problem is indexed under construction chemicals by application.
The table below compares the 8 hubs by what goes wrong and which families answer it.
| Structure or problem | What goes wrong | Families involved |
|---|---|---|
| basement waterproofing ★ | water ingress below grade, hydrostatic pressure | waterproofing, injection |
| roof waterproofing | rain and ponding on flat roofs and terraces | waterproofing |
| parking structure waterproofing | water, de-icing chlorides, traffic wear | waterproofing, repair, coatings |
| bridges, tunnels and marine structures | groundwater, traffic, chlorides | waterproofing, repair, coatings |
| water-retaining structures | internal water head, potable contact | waterproofing, coatings |
| concrete crack repair ★ | static and moving cracks, leaks | injection, sealants |
| concrete spalling | rebar corrosion, carbonation, chlorides | repair, coatings |
| masonry waterproofing | water absorption, efflorescence, rising damp | sealers, mortars |
Which Standards, Rules and Test Methods Does the Reference Track?#
The reference tracks 24 standards pages, 13 test and application methods and the EU and US rules on CE marking, VOC content and diisocyanates, each with its edition or amendment date.
Standards and regulations tracked by edition#
Every standard is cited with its edition and every rule with its instrument and date, because a data sheet is read against one edition. The 5 entry points for standards and rules are listed below.
- construction chemicals standards: EN, ASTM, ANSI, ISO, ICC-ES and UL documents by family.
- EN 1504: parts 2 to 7 are harmonised; EN 1504-9:2008 sets 11 principles (6 concrete, 5 reinforcement).
- EU Construction Products Regulation: Regulation (EU) 2024/3110 in force 2025-01-07, applies from 2026-01-08; standards cited under 305/2011 keep applying until a family moves.
- VOC limits for construction chemicals: SCAQMD Rule 1113 (amended 2016-02-05), Rule 1168 (amended 2022-11-04), EPA AIM 40 CFR 59 subpart D, EU 2004/42/EC Phase II since 2010-01-01.
- diisocyanates rules: REACH Annex XVII entry 74, 0.1 % by weight or more; label since 2022-02-24, training since 2023-08-24, renewed at least every 5 years.
Test methods, comparisons and materials#
Test methods, side-by-side comparisons and material pages make a selection checkable, and four indexes collect them, listed below.
- application and test methods: 13 pages, such as surface preparation and moisture testing.
- concrete surface profile: the 10 ICRI profiles, CSP 1 to CSP 10, under ICRI 310.2R-2013.
- construction chemicals compared: 9 side-by-side comparisons of competing classes.
- construction chemistry: 10 material pages, such as epoxy, polyurethane, acrylics, silanes and silicates.
Calculators, Applicator Match and Supplier Quotes#
Eight tools turn the reference into a job: six calculators for coverage, joints, grout, leveling and site conditions, the free applicator match and the supplier quote request.
Coverage and site-condition calculators#
Six calculators state their basis and units, listed below with the index that holds them.
- calculators and quote tools: all 8 tools.
- epoxy and coating coverage calculator: theoretical m²/L = 1,000 × volume solids / DFT in µm (1,604 ft²/US gal at 25.4 µm (1 mil) DFT, 100 % volume solids).
- sealant joint calculator: volume from joint width, depth and length.
- tile grout and adhesive calculator: quantity from tile size and joint size.
- self-leveling compound calculator: quantity from area and thickness.
- dew point calculator: substrate at least 3 °C (5.4 °F) above the dew point (ISO 8502-4:2017).
- concrete evaporation rate calculator: 1.0 kg/m²/h (0.2 lb/ft²/h) per the ACI nomograph.
Independent applicators and suppliers#
Applicator-dependent systems, such as polyurea, injection, resin floors and fireproofing, go to the applicator match, and product sourcing goes to the supplier quote request. These systems reach their rated performance only through surface preparation, mixing and film build on site, which is why construction chemical applicators install them.
No company is named, ranked or paid on either route, and manufacturers and suppliers quote against one specification, such as EN 1504-3 R4.
How Every Value Is Sourced and Checked#
Every number on ConstructionChemicals.net comes from the issuing body (CEN, ASTM, ANSI, ICC-ES, UL, EUR-Lex, eCFR, SCAQMD, ECHA) or from a named data sheet, and every standard carries its edition and every rule its date. Where a newer official edition replaces a value, the newer value is written and the page date changes; the review steps are set out under methodology and fact-checking.
What Does ConstructionChemicals.net Not Cover?#
ConstructionChemicals.net does not cover concrete admixtures, cement additives, asphalt sealers, water chemistry, consumer DIY retail, interior paint or local contractor search. Admixtures, integral and crystalline admixtures, corrosion-inhibiting admixtures, supplementary cementitious materials and fibers are covered on concreteadditives.net. Cement additives and grinding aids are covered on cementadditives.org. Asphalt and blacktop sealers are covered on asphaltadditives.net. Water chemistry is covered on watertreatmentchemicals.net.
Does ConstructionChemicals.net sell products or rank brands?#
No: the reference sells no product, names no partner and answers brand questions by standard compliance, not by ranking. A question about a brand becomes a question about what its class claim requires and where that claim appears on the declaration or data sheet, and who runs the site is explained under about ConstructionChemicals.net.
Is the applicator match free?#
Yes: the applicator match is free to use, and requests go to independent applicators who work with the named system. The form asks for the system, the structure, the area in m² (ft²) or crack length in m (ft), and the location.
Are residential projects covered?#
Yes, for system selection: garage floors, basements, driveways and showers are covered by standard, cost factor and applicator need, written for the applicator and specifier. Homeowner step-by-step instructions are not part of the reference.
How are standard editions and rules kept current?#
Each page shows the date its editions and rules were checked, and revisions such as new ASTM editions, VOC amendments and CPR implementing acts lead to a page update. Dated changes to standards and rules are reported under construction chemicals news.
